Lifou, Drehu
in the local language, is the largest island of the Loyalty Islands archipelago.its
surface area of 1150 km² is equal to that of the Martinique. To an
even greater extent than in the other islands, the abundance of natural
sites urges visitors to explore. The coast, scored with long deep bays,
gracefully harmonises long beaches of white sand, cliffs cut out of ancient
coral reef and coral beds of magical colours. Inland, a vast plain sitting
on the old lagoon, is covered with dense tropical forests which. are great
places to walk. The power of traditions and customs is tangible, not only
in activities of everyday life such as farming or hut bulding.
